Enabling email with SSL on your iPhone

Updated: May 12, 2020 By Aidi Leave a Comment

Enabling email with SSL on your iPhoneAfter setting up an IMAP or POP account on your iPhone®, you can enable Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to prevent third-parties from potentially viewing your email messages. This article’s screenshots use iPhone firmware 3.1.2, but previous versions use the same settings.

iPod Touch users may also use these settings, but must connect via Wi-Fi to send and receive email.

BEFORE YOU START: To set up your iPhone with your email, you need to know your POP or IMAP Email Server Settings and ports. To find them, got to the Email Setup Center and write down the information that displays under Email Server Settings.

To Enable Incoming Email SSL

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars and choose the desired email account.
  3. Tap Advanced.
  4. From the Incoming Settings menu, slide Use SSL to ON.
  5. Tap Server Port and make the following change:
    IMAP – 993
    POP – 995
  6. Tap Save.

To Enable Outgoing Email SSL

  1. From the SMTP menu, tap the primary outgoing server for the account. This will be the server name assigned to your domain.
  2. Next to Use SSL, tap ON.
  3. Tap Server Port and change the port to 465.
  4. Tap Save.

You may need to restart your iPhone for the changes to take effect.
